Social Service Activity of Cataract and Pterygium Screening and Surgery at Muder Ignacia General Hospital, South Central Timor, East Nusa Tenggara

In Thursday, November 9th – Sunday, November 12th, 2023 social service event of Cataract and Pterygium Screening and Surgery was held at Muder Ignacia General Hospital, South Central Timor, East Nusa Tenggara. This event is a form of participation of the Ophthalmology Specialist Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, and Bali's Indonesian Ophthalmologists Association in community service activities held in collaboration with the John Fawcett Foundation, Besipa'e Foundation, and Ophthalmologists at NTT. This eye health service also involves Muder Ignacia General Hospital as the facilities provider and medical personnel. This collaboration arose from the desire to provide medical services that have a positive impact on communities, especially the underprivileged, by eliminating economic barriers and access to eye care providers. This collaboration reflects the spirit of cooperation between the private and public sectors and demonstrates a shared responsibility in maintaining the welfare and health of the community.

The social service activities were carried out in four days. Screening for visual impairment due to cataracts was the main focus of this social service activity, apart from that, patients with pterygium disorders also received surgical services. Screening activities carried out include a medical interview, blood pressure examination, instant blood sugar level examination, visual acuity examination, eye pressure measurement, anterior segment examination of the eye, keratometry examination, biometry examination, cataract, and pterygium surgery as well as post-operative evaluation.

On the second and third days, cataract surgeries were carried out in the hospital operating room and were carried out simultaneously by 4 operators assisted by 4 instrument assistants, 2 circular staffs, and 1 preoperative staff. Screening was done by 4 staffs for the next day's surgery plan. Local medical personnel assisted in transferring patients in the operating room as well as the distribution of post-operative medication and post-operative education. On the third and fourth days, a post-operative evaluation of the previous day was carried out in the form of visual acuity examination, intraocular pressure examination, anterior segment examination, administration of additional medication if necessary, as well as providing re-education regarding eye care, and the distribution of protective sunglasses.

In this social service activity for cataract and pterygium surgery, a total of 201 people underwent eye screening. The total number of patients underwent surgery was 144 patients, consisting of 108 patients with SICS (Small Incision Cataract Surgery) on the first day, 31 patients with SICS surgery on the second day, and 5 patients with pterygoplasty surgery.
