History
1959: On December 30th, 1959 President Ir. Soekarno inaugurated the establishment of Sanglah Hospital with 150 beds. The Department of Ophthalmology was pioneered by dr. P. N. Oka, alumni of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga.
1962: The collaboration of Sanglah Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine Udayana University Denpasar in the field of education for prospective doctors.
1965: dr.P.N. Oka returned to Surabaya to learn more about Vitreoretinal, and continued by dr. Gst. Ketut Rai Tista with staff namely dr. I. Gde Made Pardita.
1975: The Department of Ophthalmology began to receive staff from alumni of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, namely in 1975 dr. N.K. Niti Susila, then in 1979 dr. Nyoman Sunerti, who continued with their specialist education at the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University, Surabaya, in 1978 and 1982, respectively.
1979: dr.Gst. Rai Tista, Sp.M was entrusted as Deputy Director of General and Finance of Sanglah Hospital. In 1982 the Head of the Department was held by dr. N.K. Niti Susila. Then the Department got a staff of alumni of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University, dr. Putu Budhiastra in 1982 then in 1984 continued his education at the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University, Surabaya.
1989: The Department of Ophthalmology received other staff namely dr. AAA Sukartini Djelantik and in 1990 continued her education to the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University, Surabaya. Then successively in 2000 and 2001 got a specialist staff, namely dr. I Wayan Gede Jayanegara, Sp.M from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitsd Indonesia, Jakarta and dr. Made Agus Kusumadjaja, SpM from the Faculty of Medicine, Hassanudin University, Makassar so that the staff consists of several alumni from different universities.
1993: dr. N.K. Niti Susila Sp.M was entrusted with the position of Assistant Dean II of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University for two terms, and the Head of Department was held by dr. Gde Md. Pardita, Sp.M. In 1995 the Department of Ophthalmology proposed to the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga to become PPDS 1, but the response was a bit slow.
1998: Head of Department held by dr. Putu Budhiastra, Sp.M, then in 2000 the Department of Ophthalmology explored the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia for the possibility of becoming the "adoptive father" of PPDS-1, in fact it was responded well despite several requirements and set forth in the form of an MOU which was formed later. And on June 6, 2001 at the KOI (Indonesian Ophthalmology Collegium) Perdami meeting at the Horison Hotel Jakarta, it was decided that PPDS-1 would be opened at the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University with the "adoptive father" of the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Jakarta.
2006: The "adoptive father" made a second visit and during his visit in February 2006 the "adoptive father" gave a recommendation to the KOI for the Ophthalmology Division of the Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University so that a visitation and accreditation be carried out before a visitation by the MKKI was carried out. In May 2007 the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Udayana received a copy of the recommendation from KOI that the Department of Ophthalmology was eligible to implement PPDS-1 Ophthalmology.
2007: Visitation and Accreditation Team Visit from KOI to the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Udayana University (accredited C).
2008: The issuance of a decree from the Director General of Higher Education with the number 1641/D/T/2008 dated 19 May 2008 concerning the Permit to Organize the Ophthalmology Study Program, Faculty of Medicine/Sanglah General Hospital Denpasar and continues until now. The Ophthalmology Study Program, Faculty of Medicine Udayana University, was established based on the decision of the Directorate General of Higher Education No 1641/D/T/2008. This decision was made on 19 May 2008, and until now (2020) the Ophthalmology Study Program of Faculty of Medicine Udayana University has graduated 92 students spread across all public and private hospitals in Indonesia.
