“Lets Talk About Corneal Ulcer” Webinar

 Ophthalmology Study Program, Faculty of Medicine Udayana University and Perdami Bali Branch had successfully once again arranged an international level webinar covering from the basic diagnosis of corneal ulcer and the recent innovations of its management. “Lets Talk About Corneal Ulcer” webinar was held on June 2021. Corneal ulcer is still one of the most frequent outpatient diagnoses found in eye clinic as well as primary care setting. Proper diagnosis and prompt treatment could lead to relatively good outcome, considering patients tend to visit in the last minute of their vision-related complaints. Besides, with so much advancements in the field of medical technology, pharmaceutical, and surgery today -- the options of treatment are endless. Ophthalmologists and primary care physicians should be able to carefully assess each unique cases of corneal ulcers and decide the best course of treatment.

 

The webinar was officially opened by Dr. dr. I Wayan Gede Jayanegara, Sp.M(K) as the Head of Perdami Bali Branch. On his welcoming speech, he emphasized on the very good opportunity of learning nowadays despite the pandemic. He thanked all the speakers for being able to join and share their knowledge with us and the audience. We invited experienced speakers to share about their knowledge and insights on corneal ulcer. On the first day (June 11th) we had dr. Siska, Sp.M, M.Kes bringing the topic of “Sterile vs Infectious Corneal Ulcer”, Dr. dr. Made Susiyanti, Sp.M(K) with “Role of General Ophthalmologist in Corneal Ulcer’s Management” and lastly the honorable Prof. dr. Tjahjono D Gondhowiarjo, Sp.M(K), PhD talked about “Update on Surgical Management in Corneal Ulcer”. Our guest speakers, Prof Tjahjono is the Development and Education Director of JEC (Jakarta Eye Clinic) Corporate and he is the Head of Indonesia Eye Bank, meanwhile Dr Susi is currently a staff of Infection and Immunology Division Department of Ophthalmology Universitas Indonesia and currently she serves as vice chairman of INOIIS (Indonesian Infection and Immunology Society). Dr Siska is also currently a staff of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Division, Department of Ophthalmology, Udayana University who previously participated in Cornea fellowship program in USA.

 

We also had international speaker joining us on the second day about “Pearls and Pitfalls in Corneal Ulcer Surgery” by Francis W Price, MD. He is the founder and president of Price Vision Group and the Cornea Research Foundation of America. He is also an internationally recognized ophthalmic surgeon and we felt very honored to have him speak in our webinar. In this opportunity, the resident doctors and the consultants also had a chance to present difficult cases and to seek for insights or comments based on his experience. The discussion went very interesting since corneal ulcers found in America and Indonesia seemed to have unique properties related to geographical aspect and we both had learn so much from it.
