Doctoral Promotion dr. Ni Made Ayu Surasmiati, M.Biomed, Sp.M(K), with Cum Laude Achievement

Located in the third floor Postgraduate courtroom, the Doctoral Promotion exam was held with the promovenda candidate dr. Ni Made Ayu Surasmiati, M.Biomed., Sp.M(K) with the dissertation title Low MicroRNA 126-3p Expression, High Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Interleukin 1ß Serum Levels as Risk Factors for Vision Threatening Diabetic Retinopathy (VTDR) in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients.
Diabetes mellitus is one of the health problems in the world, one of the complications is diabetic retinopathy which can cause blindness. The condition of diabetic retinopathy is often goes unnoticed by the patient until severe complications such as blindness occur. New blood vessel growth and inflammation are risk factors for vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy (VTDR) in patients with Type-2 diabetes through the role of cytokines VEGF and IL-1ß. MicroRNA (miRNA) in serum has a role in regulating VEGF gene expression and in this study the results of the analysis showed that low miRNA-126-3p expression and high serum VEGF levels were risk factors for VTDR in type-2 DM patients.
The development of new science (novelty) in this study shows the role of microRNA in the progression of diabetic retinopathy and it is hoped that this finding can be the basis for further research in the search for biomarkers to be developed in preventive efforts against blindness due to diabetic retinopathy through screening and early diagnosis.
